Language and Culture Exchange Program at the University of Science Malaysia, Malaysia

Project details

This program is an intensive English language exchange program from basic to advanced level, both in theory and practice, at the University of Science Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia for 2 weeks. This program is organized to provide an opportunity for Thai youth to practice their English and experience living abroad to learn new cultures and ways of life abroad, exchange perspectives with people from many countries, and broaden their worldview and vision. During this exchange, selected participants will receive many privileges, such as experiencing life like real USM students throughout the program, and also get to visit famous tourist attractions in Penang.

1. University of Science Malaysia

Universiti Sains Malaysia or University of Science, Malaysia is a public university in Malaysia. Established in 1969, it is now 53 years old. The university has 3 campuses. The main campus is located in Penang. The Kelantan campus is used to teach health subjects. The Nibong Tebal campus in Penang teaches engineering subjects. The university currently has over 30,000 students. It is the second oldest university in the country. It was first established as “Universiti Pulau Pinang”. It specializes in teaching pure sciences, applied sciences, pharmacy. It also has good research control in the fields of education, social sciences and humanities.

2.   School of Languages, Literacies and Translation

The School of Languages, Literacies and Translation was established in 1972 as a language course under the School of Education. In 1985, the course was upgraded to the Centre for Languages ​​and Translation (CLT). At that time, Malay was the medium of instruction and English became a compulsory subject for all undergraduate students, giving CLT an increasingly prominent and important role.

The CLT was upgraded to the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation on 19 November 2008 and began offering degree programs in a variety of specialized language disciplines. The first program is the Bachelor of Arts in English for Professional Purposes. Graduates of this program will not only have English language proficiency, but also the skills necessary to excel in both local and global workplaces. A wide range of foreign languages ​​are currently offered, including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, German, Korean, French, Spanish, Tamil, Russian and Thai. These programs are offered as both core and elective courses, giving students more opportunities to learn new languages. and increase career opportunities

The School of Languages, Literacies and Translation has achieved its goal with the help of all parties and factors such as dedicated and qualified staff, an environment conducive to effective language teaching, learning and research, and high-tech language facilities.

Applicant Qualifications

  1. Age between 14-25 years
  2. Students, students or youth who want to learn English from the basic level
  3. Be Thai nationality
  4. Be physically fit and have a good attitude, ready to change themselves and learn about various cultures
  5. Be responsible, flexible, adaptable and ready to learn new things
  6. Never received a scholarship from the Malaysian government

  1. Develop your English skills and proficiency in all 4 English skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking
  2. Experience university life in Malaysia and practice using English in real life in a supportive environment. Open up new perspectives and build your thinking skills
  3. Promote self-development, adjust attitudes, thoughts, and beliefs towards yourself and the world around you, as well as leadership skills
  4. Experience learning English from a basic level with a reputable international institution
  5. Experience good opportunities and networks internationally and learn about diverse cultures to expand your knowledge for future careers

Terms and Conditions for Project Participation

  1. Participants must have a passport with a minimum validity of six months. If they do not have a passport, they must apply for one immediately after being accepted to join the project.
  2. This project is a short-term project, and the university will only take care of sickness cases during official hours. Therefore, to avoid possible risks in the future, students must purchase travel insurance for one month and submit the documents to the project at least one month before departure.
  3. Participants must strictly comply with the project rules. If a participant fails to comply with the rules or causes damage to the project, the project can immediately disqualify the participant.

How to apply

  1. Complete the application form and pay a deposit of 5,000 baht.
  2. Answer the questions in the application form completely.
  3. Write an essay on the topic “Tips for Overcoming Fear of Using English” in Thai or English and attach it to the application form. It must be more than 200 words long and not more than 300 words.

Conducting the selection process and announcing the results

  1. Application period: July 26 – August 1, 2024, 23:59 (apply within 7 days only)
  2. Announcement of selected candidates: August 5, 2024
  3. Selected candidates confirm their rights between August 5-11, 2024
  4. Project participation period: October 12-26, 2024

Note

  • The schedule is subject to change as appropriate. Project participation fee All 20 project participants must pay the project fee of 29,000 baht (deducting the deposit, leaving 24,000 baht).
  • For applicants in the 21st and above ranks who are not selected, the project will refund the full deposit.

All participants will receive a free Limited Edition souvenir from International Kingdom, one set per person.

What is covered in the project

  • Century Bay Private Residences (Air-condition, ensuite bathroom, hot shower, swimming pool, washing machine, gym, cafe, etc.)
  • Received Rapid Penang bus pass and USM bus for travel within the university and Penang city
  • USM Student ID card (This card comes with privileges such as free access to the university clinic, book loans, and many more discounts.
  • Meals (Only on the opening and closing ceremonies, excluding other meals, with meals in the university starting at RM3 or 30 baht)
  • Language courses, placement tests, and field trips in Penang city
  • Round-trip transportation from Hat Yai Airport to UMS
  • Certificate from UMS upon completion of the program

Note: Things not covered by the project: Insurance, food and other personal expenses

Cost of participation in the project

All 20 project participants must pay a project fee of 29,000 baht.

Special for those who are unable to submit their application within the specified time but wish to join the project, applicants must do the following:

  2. Pay the 85,000 THB program fee. The fee will cover everything mentioned in the previous section for those who are selected.
